The Voice of the Fans

Hi everybody,

I’d like to ask your opinions on including fan generated content on the QPR website. There are many great fan sites out there with some fantastic points of view.

Some can be found here: http://www.qpr.co.uk/fans/info/fan-sites/

If the content is clearly marked as fan content, and not club endorsed content, would you like to see it included in the new website? Or do you think it should remain as a separate entity?

Thanks as ever! Anna

  1. Hi Anne,

I would love fan endorsed content on the website much like what we have now but perhaps with a few more bits added perhaps links to some of the “matchday vlogs” that have started popping up. I believe one channel makes these called “morgii Vlogs” and also links for the “QPR podcast” that is hosted by such people as Paul Finney etc. I think this would be great.

  2. Integrating some of the better and more informative things out there seems like a good idea. Loft For Words match reports for example?

  3. Fan submitted content is usually emotionally driven depending on match day results and player performance. I would like to see a reference to fan comments with a link to optional sites, ie, AKUTRS or Loft For Words. These are perfect platforms for true QPR fans and do not always reflect the views of the editor, but are still aired for all to see. This stimulates a common ground for fans of varying opinions, ages and personal choices.

  4. I’d be a little wary of this. Generally the fans’ sites articles attract comment which could, at times, be a little too “robust” for an official website. I think it would be wrong to then shackle the fans’ sites to keep them safe.

  5. I think this is a difficult one and one that’s worth a discussion.

On one hand, the club is always going to be put in an awkward scenario if there is fan content that they do not like, do not agree with, has opinion that the club knows is not accurate but perhaps the club cannot intervene for whatever reason and then there’s the obvious issue of foul language, etc.

Neil J mentions the concern that the club will “cherry pick comments” and that is a fair comment, but at the same time, I’m not sure the club can be expected to promote negative comments. That however suggests that this set up is about publishing the fan sites content, whereas, perhaps the idea was to simply link to the fan sites content rather than take any direct quotes? Or perhaps the cherry picking is picking some quotes and then providing a link?

Likewise, I’m sure you’d find some of the fan sites don’t want to feel like their being gagged, so it’s a difficult one to balance.

But another idea would be to create an “affiliates” scheme with a tiered system? There could be a tier for all, so all sites can have their link on the website somewhere, but the club doesn’t specifically do any more to promote or cross reference their site. Every site can have access to this.

The next tier up would offer a fan site more cross site exposure, perhaps through quotes and links to articles in a dedicated section that does make the news/front page on a weekly basis? But that would require those sites to meet certain guidelines and criteria, which could then tackle issues such as foul and abusive language, etc, or whatever the club deemed necessary. Maybe the club could throw in some additional support, like high resolution images for the crest and perhaps access to some other stock images to help the fan sites. Maybe in return, QPR themselves have an affiliate style logo displayed on the fan sites, so promotion is done both ways and not just in favour of the fan sites.

I think of the excellent work the fan sites have done with the media team over recent years, and it’s something that can be built on. Maybe things like the press releases being mailed to these sites whenever there is an announcement, could be built into one of these schemes, or the interviews with the youth players that have occurred in the same time.

However, this could currently mean that some people with access to that information would lose it, so that may not go down well either, especially if those sites didn’t meet the criteria.

In the end, there is an opportunity to try and do something to help each other, but it needs a mutually beneficial environment to do so. Thought I’d raise the above as an idea, I’m not sure if that is the answer, but if it sparks a discussion and further ideas, then maybe something good can come out of it.
